With the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, we celebrate the end of a poorly rendered and evil court precedent that made abortion the law of the land for nearly 50 years. Some have wondered if this marks full victory and ends the need for the pro-life movement. I have heard several quote Churchill in response: “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” Much remains to be done in the legal realm to protect the unborn. Even more remains to meet those facing unplanned pregnancy with hope and support and to create a culture that values life.
“But wait, isn’t abortion illegal in Texas?” The answer is… kind of? It is complicated. Pre-Roe law in Texas prohibited abortion, but laws since Roe have regulated abortion. Thus, it is possible that pre-Roe laws will not hold up in court, and legal proceedings to determine the answer are in play as this is being typed. Texas’ “trigger law”, the Human Life Protection Act, is set to go into effect and prohibit abortion 30 days after the Supreme Court’s final judgement is issued which should be about a month after the release of the opinion. Yes, we have the opinion, but we await the judgement.
“But soon there will be no abortions in Texas, right?” No unfortunately, women in Texas will continue to have abortions. There will be fewer, but they will happen. Some will do so by traveling to Mexico or neighboring states like New Mexico and Colorado that will continue to protect abortion which remains legal. Some will have abortion medication shipped to them illegally, and others will attempt “home remedy” abortions. Yes, we have already seen a patient at our clinic who had tried the latter within the last couple of months. It continues to be essential that our Options Clinic staff and volunteers seek out those pursuing abortion and provide hope-filled, life-affirming advocacy to guide them to life decisions.
“But won’t there be many babies born who would have been aborted under Roe?” Praise God, yes! That is where our Pregnancy Center will meet them with education, material assistance, and ongoing support. We will instruct and empower new moms and dads to parent well regardless of whether the pregnancy was planned. The pro-abortion accusation that pro-life people only care about babies before they are born has never been true, and we intend to continue to prove just how baseless it is.
